A Vampire's Promise by Carla Susan Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Purchase Links: Amazon Barnes & Noble  Kensington Books

Although slow starting and sometimes a little too descriptive, A Vampire's Promises managed to have me entranced by the end. The story starts out with Rowan going to the rescue of her best friend Laycee and of course she happens to met Gabriel along the way. To be bluntly honest the beginning is not only slow starting but a little forgettable. I found myself more interested in Laycee's story than what was supposed to be developing between Gabriel and Rowan. That aside once you get approximately a fourth of the way into the story things start getting better. The author sprinkles a few perfect moments throughout the story including a comedic nod to twilight and a sweet moment provided by Gabriel that had me literally saying "Awe that's so sweet." Without spoiling the story I will say the ending was fantastic. I spent the whole novel asking myself "How does Rowan know Gabriel" and while it wasn't actually answered by the end, the author provides you with another piece to the puzzle. Carla Susan Smith provided an intriguing final chapter that left me craving the second book like a literary madwoman.
There are only two real problems that I have with this book. Number one is that the scene where Rowan goes into work appears seemingly out of no where. Rowan goes from telling Lacyee goodbye to magically being at work. There is no scene of Rowan driving or change in chapter.
Number two is during Rowan and Gabriel's love making scene the author uses the description "virginal membrane." While clinically appropriate, this term is very off-putting when applied to a romance novel. And quite honestly this ruined the scene for me.
Once a solution for the two problems mentioned above has been applied I would most definitely recommend this book to readers of the following genres: Romance , Sci Fi & Fantasy.

*NetGalley provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
